Patricia Barksdale\, U.S. Magistrate Judge\, Middle District of FloridaPatricia Barksdale was sworn in as a United States Magistrate Judge in 2013. Judge Barksdale received her B.A. and J.D. from the University of Florida. Judge Barksdale clerked for Circuit Judge Emmett Cox\, United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit\, and later for District Judge Timothy Corrigan\, United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. She worked in private practice at a national law firm and as in-house counsel for a large corporation before serving eight years as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Middle District of Florida. Through an appointment by Chief Justice John Roberts\, she recently served as the Magistrate Judge Observer to the Judicial Conference. She has served as Chair of The Florida Bar Federal Practice Committee\, President of the Jacksonville Chapter of the Federal Bar Association\, and President of the Chester Bedell American Inn of Court. She currently serves on the University of Florida Law Center Association Board of Trustees and the Case Management Modernization Board. \nHon. Allison Goddard\, U.S. Magistrate Judge\, Southern District of CaliforniaJudge Allison Goddard was sworn in as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of California in August 2019. She graduated from Boston College in 1993 and received her J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law in 2000. Judge Goddard spent the first half of her legal career representing corporate defendants in litigation at Cooley LLP and her own law firm\, Jaczko Goddard LLP. In 2011\, she shifted her practice to representing plaintiffs in complex and intellectual property litigation. She has tried several cases\, including class actions and patent infringement disputes. Judge Goddard speaks regularly on eDiscovery and technology in the law. She teaches trial practice and coaches a mock trial team at a local high school. She is a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of San Diego School of Law and the Executive Board of the Louis M. Welsh Inn of Court. \nHon. A. Joel Richlin\, U.S. Magistrate Judge\, Central District of CaliforniaJudge A. Joel Richlin was sworn in as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Central District of California in July of 2023. He graduated from Northwestern University in 2003 and received his J.D. from Loyola Law School Los Angeles in 2006. Judge Richlin began his career serving as a law clerk to three judges in the Central District of California for nearly five years\, working at both the U.S. Bankruptcy Court and the U.S. District Court. Judge Richlin then worked in the Los Angeles Office of international law firm\, Foley & Lardner LLP\, where he was a Senior Counsel in the Business Litigation Group. Judge Richlin ultimately left Foley & Lardner LLP to serve as in-house counsel for Prime Healthcare\, one of the nation’s largest hospital systems. Judge Richlin served as the Chief Litigation Officer and then General Counsel for Prime Healthcare\, where he led a national legal department of more than 30 attorneys and 19 support staff and was responsible for all litigation on behalf of the company’s hospitals and other business units\, which included a real estate development firm and medical school. For the past 16 years\, Judge Richlin has also served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Loyola Law School Los Angeles where he has taught various classes involving appellate brief writing and oral advocacy.

DESCRIPTION:In person event featuring 2 federal judges discussing on how emoji are impacting discovery and recent case law – 1 hour CLE credit.\n\n\nAbout this event \nT﻿he Chicago chapter of ACEDS will be hosting an in-person event at the law firm of Barack Ferrazzano\, in conjunction with the other mid-west chapters of ACEDS. \nKelly Twigger\, principal at ESI Attorneys\, will moderate a panel discussion featuring Judge Xavier Rodriguez\, W.D of Texas and Judge William Matthewman\, S.D. of Florida\, on how emoji are impacting discovery and recent case law decisions. \n \nPanelists: \nUnited States Magistrate Judge William Matthewman  \n\nAppointed to the federal bench in 2012 and sits in the West Palm Beach Division of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. \nAs a U.S. Magistrate Judge\, he handles both civil and criminal cases\, including pretrial matters and trials.  \nPrior to joining the bench\, Judge Matthewman was a very active trial attorney who handled both criminal and civil cases\, including high profile cases which were covered on live in-session Court TV\, Dateline\, 48 Hours\, and other programs. \nHe was Board certified by The Florida Bar in criminal trial practice before his appointment to the bench and is AV rated by Martindale Hubbell. \nHe has been a member of The Florida Bar and a trial lawyer since 1983\, handling numerous cases in state and federal courts.  \nHe received his B.S. degree and Masters degree from Florida International University in Miami\, and he received his Law Degree\, with Honors\, from the University of Florida College of Law. While at University of Florida Law School\, he was Research Editor of the University of Florida Law Review.\nHe has published several articles\, including most recently the following law review article: William D. Matthewman\, Towards A New Paradigm For E-Discovery In Civil Litigation: A Judicial Perspective\, 71 Fla. L. Rev. 1261 (September\, 2019). This Florida Law Review article deals with e-discovery and the 10 most important core concepts of the new e-discovery paradigm.\n\n \nXavier Rodriguez  \n\nFormer Texas Supreme Court Justice and currently sits on the bench as a United States District Judge for the Western District of Texas. \nBorn in San Antonio\, Texas\, he received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University\, a master’s degree from the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Texas Law School. \nPrior to assuming the bench\, he was a partner in the international law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski (now known as Norton Rose Fulbright).\nJudge Rodriguez is a frequent speaker on continuing legal education seminars and has authored numerous articles regarding employment law\, discovery and arbitration issues. \nHe is the editor of Essentials of E-Discovery (TexasBarBooks 2d ed. 2021). \nHe is a member of The Sedona Conference Judicial Advisory Board\, the Georgetown Advanced E-Discovery Institute Advisory Board\, and serves as the Distinguished Visiting Jurist-in-Residence and adjunct professor of law at the St. Mary’s University School of Law. \nHe was elected to membership in the American Law Institute and is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and the Texas Bar Foundation.\nIn 2011 he was awarded the Rosewood Gavel Award for outstanding judicial service from the St. Mary’s University School of Law.
